School Readiness for Preschoolers: How We Prepare Children for Big School in Leytonstone

A steady start for big school: confidence, communication and everyday independence.
What does school readiness mean?
School readiness for preschoolers is not a test, and it does not mean every child must read, write or count to a certain level before Reception. It is about helping children feel secure enough to take part in new experiences, communicate with others and gradually manage more of their everyday routines.
Children develop at different rates. In practice, readiness can include:
- Confidence: feeling safe with familiar adults and being willing to try an activity.
- Self-awareness: beginning to recognise feelings, interests and when help is needed.
- Independence: having a go at simple tasks, such as putting belongings away or washing hands.
- Communication: sharing needs and ideas, listening to others and joining in with stories or play.
- Social participation: practising turn-taking and becoming familiar with group routines.
These are skills children build over time, with support. There is no single checklist that every child must complete.

The Preschool Room at Excel Kids
Excel Kids Day Nursery & Contact Centre has a dedicated Preschool Room for children aged 3–4 years. The environment supports the transition to primary school by building confidence and self-awareness.
In preschool, children can practise everyday skills as part of play and nursery routines. Adults can encourage children to make choices, express what they need and try manageable tasks for themselves. Support is there when a child needs it; independence does not mean expecting a young child to manage everything alone.
Hi, we’re here to help children take their next steps at their own pace. A calm, familiar setting gives children room to practise and helps adults notice what each child enjoys and where they may need a little more support.

Confidence and self-awareness
Starting school brings new rooms, adults, children and routines. At preschool, everyday experiences give children opportunities to become more comfortable joining in, choosing an activity and telling an adult what they think or feel.
A child might decide which book to hear, choose materials for a creative activity or ask for help with a toy. These small moments help children learn that their choices matter and that adults are available when they need support.
Children also begin to recognise that others have ideas and feelings. Group play and shared activities provide natural opportunities to listen, wait, take turns and practise getting along.
Communication and listening
Communication is part of almost everything children do: playing together, following a familiar routine, asking for help and sharing an idea. Stories, songs, conversation and role-play can all give children ways to practise listening and expressing themselves.
Children communicate in different ways. Speak with us about the words, signs, pictures or other approaches your child uses, so we can support their communication in a familiar and consistent way.
A child does not need to speak in full sentences to take part. The useful steps are being able to communicate needs and interests in a way that works for them, and having patient adults who listen and respond.
Independence in daily routines
School readiness also includes simple self-care and everyday tasks. At preschool, children can work towards doing more for themselves, with encouragement and adult help as needed.
Depending on the child, this might mean practising handwashing, putting a coat or bag in its place, helping to tidy up or taking part in snack-time routines. The aim is to build confidence through practice, not to rush or compare children.

Learning through play
Children build understanding by exploring, making, talking and trying again. Creative activities and expressive arts can encourage them to make choices, share materials and explain what they are doing. Play also gives children opportunities to develop curiosity and stay with an activity for a little longer.
Excel Kids focuses on creative learning and school readiness across its nursery environment. The earlier rooms support children’s learning too: the Baby Room is for children aged 3 months–2 years, with sensory and interactive play, while the Toddler Room is for children aged 2–3 years, with role-play and dressing up to encourage social and emotional development.
Each room is suited to a different age group. The Preschool Room builds on children’s earlier experiences as they approach their move to primary school.
Working with families
Children benefit when the important adults in their lives share useful information. Tell us what your child enjoys, what helps when they feel unsure and how they communicate at home. This helps us understand your child as an individual.
Excel Kids’ online children system lets parents follow their child’s day in real time. It is a practical way to stay connected with what is happening at nursery and to have information that can help start conversations at home.
You can also support readiness in simple ways:
- Let your child try small tasks, while staying nearby to help.
- Share a story or talk together about the day.
- Offer simple choices, such as which book to read.
- Practise familiar routines without turning them into a test.
- Talk about starting school in a calm, positive way.
Children may need different kinds of support, and some may need more time to feel settled. Please talk with us if you have questions about your child’s transition.
